Take Your Woodworking Skills to the Next Level and Become a Contractor

Woodworking

Does working with wood for a living sound like a dream job for you?

Well, if so, then you might want to take your love of woodworking to the next level and start a contracting business.

Woodworking incorporates so many skills that can be directly tied into the construction industry. And with easily transferable skills, you’ll be in good shape to start jumping on construction jobs, especially if you have a portfolio of work that you can show to prospective clients.

But no matter what you do as a contractor, you truly have to love what you do if you want to build a business off of your efforts.

The contracting world isn’t only limited to construction. In fact, there are several sub-trades that you can specialize in as well. And if woodworking is your niche, you might decide to become a contractor in one or more of the following categories.

Aesthetic Elements

Aesthetics are essentially the visually pleasing elements of a design. And this has a lot to do with the design itself, pattern, shape, and scale.

As a woodworker, you might choose to contract out to produce aesthetics on buildings. Whether this is ornate wood trim designs, railings, or any other element, of design is your speciality then this could be a lucrative niche for you to start in.

But aesthetics aren’t always small in scale. Some of these are very large. And depending on what your clients demand, you might need to upgrade your tools and equipment in a few areas.

For example, if you’re going to be working on big projects, you may need to transport heavy or large materials.

And if you don’t have a proper truck for this, you might find yourself in a predicament. Fortunately, you can rent a flatbed work truck for your contracting needs until you’re able to purchase one.

Cabinetry

Most kitchens and living spaces come with some sort of basic cabinetry work. And many of these aren’t too elaborate when it comes to design. But many first-time homeowners like to remodel their new homes and add design elements that reflect their sense of style, and new cabinets are often on the list.

Ornate cabinetry work requires a delicate hand and precise carpentry skills. As a woodworker, you already have these skills. And if you can incorporate ornate designs into your cabinetry, you might just become a sought after contractor in your local community.

As far as a niche goes, cornering the cabinetry market might be a good strategy. Because you don’t typically find too many custom cabinet makers in smaller communities across the country.

Often a homeowner has to search around for cabinetry professionals. So this might be your ticket to starting a lucrative cabinetry contracting business.

Decking

Maybe a basic style of woodworking is more your speed. And perhaps you also like building structures. If this is the case, then you might consider becoming a decking contractor.

Decking can tie a property together, and is often considered a part of landscaping design.

If you think about it, a nice deck can really bring out the overall appeal of any property. Not only do decks offer homeowners a space where they can relax and enjoy their yard, it also offers a space for entertainment and adds a bit of structure to the home.

Building basic deck structures can also be a lucrative contracting job. And along these lines, if you can produce interesting designs, your deck building might start to become noticed in your local community. And this will be a good sign going forward because word of mouth travels fast.

If you love woodworking, you can easily take steps to make your hobby and your passion a full-time job. Not too many people get to do what they love for a living. But with a little determination and effort, you’ll be well on your way to living the life of your dreams.
