Convergence Insufficiency – Everything You Need to Know

Convergence Insufficiency

Convergence insufficiency has been a topic of interest for psychologists for a variety of reasons. Human Eyes are quite complicated. Although the entire process of seeing has been figured out by science, there is still a certain level of mystery attached to the way our eyes operate. This is what convergence psychology is concerned with.

Convergence insufficiency happens when a person’s ability to see objects close to them gets affected. It shifts away from the normal mode of operation and can cause unclear vision. Let’s dig in a little deeper and see what convergence insufficiency actually is and how it related to convergence psychology.

What is Convergence Insufficiency?

As per normal behavior, the eyes of a person go slightly inwards when they have to see an object from up close. Convergence inadequacy occurs when the natural movement of the eyes when seeing objects from close is outwards. The object doesn’t look clear enough and the subject has to exert more effort to get a clear view.

This can lead to doubled or even blurred vision in the long run. It affects the perception and the quality of seeing experience for an individual. If not identified and treated from the start, it can affect the depth perception of your eyes and can even lead to mental stress and psychological disorders.

What are the reasons for Convergence Insufficiency?

Convergence inadequacy can happen for a variety of reasons. It can either be natural or can also be the aftereffect of a certain physical health condition. Although in most cases, the studies have shown that this issue happens naturally or overtime.

Convergence insufficiency can happen after infection, some kind of brain injury or can even be a side effect of some kind of medication. The exact reason for this is unknown. Researchers have not been able to pinpoint exactly why convergence insufficiency happens and how it can be prevented from happening at all.

People who work under conditions that require them to do near work for extended periods of time can also fell victim to convergence insufficiency. It most commonly occurs in children and young adults.

Although there haven’t been solid preventive mechanisms for stopping convergence inadequacy from occurring, there are ways it can be treated. This is what we are going to talk to you about now.

Convergence Insufficiency Treatment

Did you know more than 50% of our brain is dedicated for managing and interpreting visual output? It is an amazing fact, and this is what can be used for the treatment of convergence inadequacy.

The process of Vision Therapy is used for treating convergence inadequacy. In this process, the subject has to go through certain exercises that are meant to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain. Since our brains are flexible and they can learn to be better, these exercises can help reduce the effects of convergence insufficiency.

Vision Therapy, although the most effective, it is not the only way of treating convergence insufficiency. Prism lenses can also be used for the exact same purpose. If a person can’t go through the vision therapy, they are given prism lenses to meet the convergence insufficiency issue.

Surgery is the final resort. This is considered to be the final option and most of the time, things don’t come to doing surgery. Vision therapy works just fine in most cases. You can learn more about convergence psychology Here.

Can Convergence Insufficiency Happen again?

Generally, it takes about 12 to 24 sessions of vision therapy for it to work. But once the treatment is successful, the researchers have found that the chances for it coming back are quite low. In fact, about 87.5% of the people treated with vision therapy are observed to be completely fine, even after a lot of time since they got their treatment. Still, there are chances that the regression might happen, but it can be managed via the same process again.

Convergence psychology is a complicated subject that can define in some ways, how the human experience of perception happens. Convergence Insufficiency is the biggest issue related to it. So, if you feel like you are suffering from convergence insufficiency then we strongly recommend that you seek professional help at once.
