Careers in High Demand: Certified Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring

Intraoperative Monitoring

If you are looking for an exciting job in the medical field without years of medical school, certified neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring (CNIM) is an in-demand career that may be right for you.

Job Description

CNIM technologists monitor a patient’s brain activity and nervous system during a surgical procedure. The purpose of doing so is to avoid neurological damage and reduce complications.

CNIM technologists are skilled in performing sophisticated neurological tests such as electromyography, EEGs, evoked potentials, and others. While there are various paths to becoming a CNIM technologist, the most lucrative and rewarding positions stem from receiving certification in the field. The American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists, or ABRET, oversees CNIM technologists’ certification.

Physical Therapy Assistant Salaries

According to ZipRecruiter, as of July 2020, CNIM technologists earn an average annual salary of $75,290. But certain factors, such as job location, certification levels, and experience in the field, can influence individual salaries and be higher or lower than average.

For Instances

  • Velocity Neuro Care in Denver, CO, has ongoing positions for CNIM technologists. Velocity Neuro Care is an employee-owned enterprise that works with surgical teams throughout Colorado.
  • MPOWER Health is often looking for certified technicians to fill CNIM jobs in hospitals and medical centers around the US. These positions allow you to work in operating rooms and participate in life changing neurological surgeries.
  • Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, is searching for an electrodiagnostic technician and prefers a candidate with CNIM certification. Montefiore is a state-of-the-art University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the largest academic medical centers in the U.S.

Training and Requirements

ABRET is a widely recognized credentialing board for CNIM technologist candidates. According to ABRET, there are four possible pathways towards CNIM certification. CNIM Pathway I certification requires a CAAHEP diploma, basic life support and CPR certification, and 100 documented hours working with NIOM (neuro intraoperative monitoring) cases.

CNIM Pathway II certification involves 150 hours of documented NIOM casework, an R. EEG T or R. EP T credential, and current certification in CPR and basic life support. CNIM Pathway III is a bachelor’s Degree level certification that requires a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education plus 30 classroom hours in intraoperative monitoring and the documented 150 NIOM cases and current CPR and basic life support certification.

CNIM Pathway IV is a formal program in neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring. To meet the requirements for this level, a candidate must receive certification from a program endorsed by ABRET and the 150 documented cases and up-to-date certification in basic life support and CPR.

In addition to each pathway level’s requirements, to work as a CNIM technologist, one must successfully pass the CNIM exam.
